Catherine Dunham (American, 1909–2006) was an American dancer, choreographer, author, educator, and social activist. Dunham had one of the most successful dance careers in American and European theater of the 20th century, and directed her own dance company for many years. Eduardo Vernazza (Uruguayan, 1910–1991) recorded his impressions of the world’s great musicians, singers and dancers in brilliant, deft sketches made during live performance. He developed some of sketches from pencil to lithograph with even greater intensity of bravura, calligraphic line. The lithographic sketches offered here were made in the 1930s and early 40s.
