Description

Hans Figura / Austrian, 1898-1978

The Hohe Markt, located in the city center, is Vienna’s oldest market.  The 18th century Marriage fountain (Vermählungsbrunnen) celebrates the marriage of Mary and Joseph.

A lovely feature of Figura’s etchings on satin is the shimmering tones of the unprinted areas. These will change from highlight to shadow as you view the print from different angles. This enchanting effect is not conveyed by these photos– it must be seen directly.

Note: etchings on satin require multiple points of support to keep the image in square. At some time in its long history, this print was supported with adhesive that left corner stains. (See second image with full margins.) The stains do not spread, and in this case there is ample room for a generous mat window. The print will appear pristine when matted.
